CEMB Achieves Major Milestone with Approval of CKC Cotton Varieties for General Cultivation in Sindh
17 March 2025 – The Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB) has achieved a significant milestone with the official approval of its genetically modified (GM) cotton varieties (CKC-01, CKC-03, and CKC-06) for general cultivation in Sindh. The approval, granted by the Sindh Seed Council during its 36th Meeting (Part 2), marks a major advancement in agricultural biotechnology and reinforces CEMB’s commitment to innovation in crop science.
The approved CEMB cotton varieties incorporate advanced genetic modifications, including double and triple gene technology, offering improved resistance against bollworms and Glyphosate application. Additionally, these varieties exhibit enhanced fibre quality and drought tolerance, addressing key challenges faced by cotton growers in Sindh.
Prof. Dr. Abdul Qayyum Rao expressed optimism about the approval, stating, “This milestone reflects the advancements in modern biotechnology and its potential to support Pakistan’s agricultural sector.” Dr. Allah Bakhsh further explained that these varieties will contribute to higher yields, reduced pesticide use, and improved economic benefits for farmers.
Adding to this, Prof. Dr. Moazur Rahman, Director of CEMB, emphasized the institute’s commitment to agricultural biotechnology, stating, “The approval of CKC varieties is a testament to CEMB’s dedication to research-driven solutions. These cotton varieties will not only enhance productivity but also promote sustainable agricultural practices across Sindh, benefiting both farmers and the economy.”
The approval of CKC cotton varieties stands as a testament to CEMB’s continued leadership in biotechnology research. Farmers across Sindh will soon have access to these improved seeds, paving the way for more sustainable and efficient cotton farming. This achievement reinforces CEMB’s vital role in pioneering genetic advancements to improve sustainability, and economic growth in Pakistan.
