\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDr. S. Riazuddin obtained Ph.D from the University of Reading, England in 1970. Subsequently, he worked as Postdoctoral Fellow in some of the best labs including those of Bryn Bridges at University of Sussex, Brighton, England; Larry Grossman at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA; Tomas Lindahl at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden; and Eugene Nester\/ Milton P. Gordon at University of Washington, Seattle, USA. He returned to Pakistan in 1978, and established a solid and definitive programme of molecular biology research first at the Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology, Faisalabad and then as Founding Director, Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology, University of the Punjab, Lahore. To overcome the inherent constraints of practicing advanced molecular biology research in a scientifically developing country, he established collaborations with counterpart labs to combine the complementary strengths of the participating laboratories. He made good uses of the local genetic resource in studies on (i) restriction enzymes with Richard J. Roberts (Nobel Laureate), then at Cold Sprig Harbor Labs, NY, USA; (ii) in hearing impairment with Thomas Friedman at NIDCD, Bethesda, MD, USA; (iii) in speech impairment with Dennis Drayna at NIH, MD, USA; and (iv) in vision impairment with Paul Sieving at NEI, Bethesda, MD, USA and John Gottsch at Wilmer Ophthalmology Institute, Baltimore, USA. He possesses the unique quality of combining the complimentary strengths of participating laboratories resulting in extremely productive collaborations. This has helped him to overcome the inherent constraints of working in scientifically developing country and also been a source of additional funding from agencies such as Rockefeller Foundation, NY USA; National Science Foundation, Washington, USA; National Institute of Health, Bethesda, USA and Commission of the European Community, Brussels, Belgium.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDr Khan started her research carrier in 1970 with M.Sc thesis work on the morphogenesis of erythrocytes in Rana cyanophlyctis, comparing the changes in normal with thyroxin and radiation induced metamorphosis. As a result of excellent work, She published six papers and got first position in M.Sc. She received merit scholarships from Matric to M.Sc.\nFrom 1974 to 1981, She worked on breast cancer and lymphomas at the Ontario Cancer Research Institute, Toronto, Canada. After passing a course in Microbiology at Toronto Institute of Medical Technology, She joined a clinical pathology laboratory in Karachi in 1981. In 1987 She joined National Health Research Complex, Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore where She worked on inherited metabolic disorders and published six papers.\nIn 1990, She joined CAMB to start a new career in molecular biology. Her research interests were focused on determining the molecular and genetic basis of inherited disorders. The first candidate was thalassemia, which is the most prevalent hemoglobin disorder in Pakistan. I have published in Pakistan the first paper on the molecular genetic diagnosis of \u03b2-thalassemia. She had molecularly characterized \u03b1 and \u03b2-thalassemia and reported 22 \u03b2-thalassemia mutations including three rare (unreported so far in Asian population) and three \u03b1-thalassemia mutations with variable frequencies among six major ethnic\/linguistic groups in Pakistan. In addition three \u03b2-globin chain hemoglobin variants and one rare \u03b12 -globin chain variant Hb Sallanches were also identified. She had reported molecular factors like \u03b1-gene deletions and Xmn1 polymorphism causing milder phenotypes in thalassemia patients. Participated in an IAEA sponsored multi-centre study to define further the molecular basis of thalassemia in Thailand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Syria, Cyprus and India and to develop a simple molecular diagnostic strategy by ARMS-PCR (18). On the basis of above results, developed procedures for prenatal diagnosis. The above success and encouragement from Professor S. Riazuddin, other genetic diseases like polycystic kidney disease and hereditary hearing and vision impairment were also included in the programme.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWith over 35 years of professional experience at the Center of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), University of the Punjab, Lahore, Prof. Dr Tayyab Husnain has served both as a leader and a scientist, bringing together a wealth of expertise in administration and molecular biology. His administrative skills marked by dedication, hard work, management, leadership, and professionalism have been complemented by his scientific proficiency in gene editing and plant transformation. Prof. Husnain spearheaded the development of Pakistan’s first double gene insect-resistant transgenic cotton varieties, including CEMB 33, CA12, and CEMB-66, as well as the first triple gene insect- and herbicide-resistant cotton varieties, CKC-1 and CKC-3. His contributions also include the creation of transgenic cotton with improved fiber characteristics, all of which have been patented and commercialized. As Director of CEMB, he has led a team of over 300 researchers and students, fostering innovation that has produced 765 publications with an impact factor exceeding 2000 and 13 patents. His leadership has also secured revenue through international collaborations, national MOUs, and grants, amounting to millions of rupees. significantly contributed to advancing both science and the agricultural economy in Pakistan. His work has earned recognition through prestigious honors like the Izaz-i-Fazeelat (2005), Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (2008) for academic excellence and Satha Innovation Award (2017) for multigenic cotton development that significantly contributed to advancing both science and the agricultural economy in Pakistan.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tProfessor Ahmad Ali Shahid brings\nover 34 years of extensive experience in teaching, research, and academic\nadministration, including more than two years as Director of the Centre of\nExcellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB) at the University of the Punjab, Lahore.\nHe has led the Plant Molecular Biology, Biosafety, and DNA Forensic groups for\ntwo decades and has overseen the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs at CEMB for 10\nyears. Under his leadership, biosafety studies for all CEMB Bt cotton varieties\nwere successfully conducted.\nProfessor Shahid earned his M.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture with a\nfocus on Plant Pathology from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, and his\nPh.D. in Molecular Biology from the Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology\n(CEMB), University of the Punjab. He further completed a postdoctoral\nfellowship at the University of Nottingham, UK, where he characterized six\nabscission-related genes in Arabidopsis. Additionally, Dr. Shahid spent nine\nmonths as a faculty member at University College London, UK, where he worked on\npurifying phytotoxic compounds from the chickpea fungus Ascochyta rabiei.\nHe has mentored more than 30 Ph. D scholars, two postdoctoral\nresearchers, and 100 M.Phil students. His research accomplishments include\nleading 13 research projects and publishing 200 international and 31 national\npapers, with a combined impact factor of 350 and over 300 citations. His\nacademic endeavours have led him to participate in international meetings,\nconferences, and seminars across 10 countries, where he has presented his work\nat 75 global and national symposia.\nProfessor Ahmad Ali Shahid currently\nserves as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Information Technology at Sahara\nUniversity, Narowal.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

He has a vast experience to work on Metal Binding Proteins using DNA, RNA Isolation and their electrophoresis. He has worked on fungus Ascochyta Rabiei for its toxin inducing substances in Chickpea. He has worked with the Bioinformatics group of CEMB as a member to synthesize genes for the production of Pharmaceutical proteins like Interferon and Erythropoietin. Administratively, He has been Chairman Academic Committee of CEMB from 2011-2013. He has supervised 22 M.Phil. & 6 PhD students during his tenure. He has published 31 International articles in peer reviewed journals and many conference papers are on his credit. He has obtained research grants from MoST.
